Mets Minors Recap: Frankie Montas Makes Debut In Rehab Apperance

0 3

Frankie Montas took his first big step towards a return to Queens Saturday, as he made his rehab debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones (High-A) in his first start since hitting the injured list with a high-grade lat strain in February.

Triple-A

Game 1: Syracuse Mets (21-28) 4, Rochester Red Wings (15-32) 7

BOX SCORE

Ronny Mauricio is on a four-game hitting streak since joining Syracuse on the 18th of the month and has already tallied eight hits to begin his path back to New York. Meanwhile, Hayden Senger is riding an eight-game hit streak dating back to May 10 and smacked his second homer of the season. Joey Meneses hit a run-scoring double and now has RBIs in back-to-back games.

Pitching 6 2/3 innings, and giving up three earned runs on five hits while walking just one, Blade Tidwell had a strong showing on Saturday. Compared to his start in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago, when control problems and a few unfortunate hits limited his effectiveness, Tidwell displayed better command even though he wasn’t dominant.

Game 2: Syracuse Mets (22-28) 14, Rochester Red Wings (15-33) 3

BOX SCORE

  • 1B Joey Meneses – 3-for-3, HR, 4 R (.799 OPS)
  • LF Luke Ritter – 2-for-3, 2B, 3 RBIs (.640 OPS)
  • 2B Luis De Los Santos – 2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBIs (.656 OPS)

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader treated the Syracuse offense much better. Joey Meneses led the way with getting on base in all plate appearances while Luke Ritter and Luis De Los Santos plated two runs each.

Ritter has largely struggled this season, after being one of the more consistent bats in the Mets’ system over the last few seasons. He has his OPS up to a season-high .640.

  • RHP Dom Hamel – 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO (4.01 ERA)
  • RHP Dedniel Núñez – 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 SO (2.92 ERA)

Dom Hamel came on after Austin Warren served as the game’s opener. Hamel turned in three hitless innings lowering his season ERA to an encouraging 4.01.

Dedniel Núñez also turned in a scoreless outing, lowering his Triple-A ERA to 2.92.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (25-17) 2 vs. Richmond Flying Squirrels (13-30) 2,

BOX SCORE

Wyatt Young played hero ball on Sunday, delivering a clutch walk-off two-run single that scored Omar De Los Santos and D’Andre Smith to seal the win. The 25-year-old infielder has been swinging a hot bat lately, collecting five hits over his last two games.

Southpaw Zach Thornton was masterful on Saturday, pitching six perfect innings and dicing up six along the way, and has allowed two earned runs over his last three starts. Alex Carrillo held down the fort and kept the game within reach.

High-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (29-14) 8 vs. Jersey Shore Blueclaws (16-26) 10

Box Score

Carson Benge hit his 11th double of the year and has only gone hitless once since May 8, continuing to be a consistent force in the lineup. The 22-year-old, former two-way player, has been locked in at the plate and could be playing his way into a well-earned promotion to Double-A Binghamton in the near future.

Frankie Montas had a tough season debut, surrendering two earned runs over just 1 1/3 innings while walking two and striking out one. It was a shaky start for the veteran right-handed starter, who is still working his way back from a lat injury that has kept him sidelined for most of spring training.

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (22-19) 4, Jupiter Hammerheads (19-25) 0

BOX SCORE

Nick Roselli recorded three RBIs Saturday, including a two-run single, which could hopefully turn the season around for the 22-year-old who was selected in the 11th round of the draft last year. Simon Juan collected his sixth hit in as many games, while driving in a run.

Edgar Moreta pushed through a gutsy start on Sunday, navigating traffic on the basepaths by allowing three hits and issuing two walks, yet still managing to toss 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Estarlin Escalante, who had bounced back in his previous outing, tossed his second consecutive scoreless outing by closing the door in the 5th inning to secure a St Lucie win.

Florida Complex League

FCL Mets (6-9) 3, FCL Astros (10-4) 7

BOX SCORE

Randy Guzman hit his second home run of the season and extended his hitting streak to five games, dating back to the 19th. With his bat heating up, the 20-year-old from the Dominican Republic could become a key run producer for the FCL lineup.

Jose Guevara turned in a solid bounce-back outing on Sunday, striking out six over four innings while allowing just two hits and two earned runs. Elwis Mijares had a solid professional debut, striking out three and allowing just one run, flashing the swing-and-miss stuff that could make him an intriguing arm down the road.
