Mariners Reacts Survey: Rivalry Weekend Review
Is San Diego really a rival though?
Welcome back for another week of Mariners’ Reacts. It was another successful weekend for the boys in blue and teal, who seem to be back to their winning ways after a total sweep of their supposed rival, the San Diego Padres.
I don’t know about you but I’ve never understood this rivalry and until this year (I’m 27) I didn’t even know who Eddie Vedder was. Even now, I could not tell you the name of a single Pearl Jam song, like I could recognize the more famous ones, but I’m not gonna be like “Oh yeah, that’s Pearl Jam.” I don’t know, maybe it’s because I never got into rock as a kid, I was always more hip hop, rap, and R&B. Anyway yeah, I don’t get this rivalry, it’s not like the cities are close together, or in the same division or even in the same league and have never meet in the playoffs. The Pilots joined the league at the same time as the Padres, but considering they moved to Milwaukee a year later, I don’t think that connection really holds water. I’m glad we swept the Padres, but I don't see the connection at all beyond playing each other in the regular season in this farcical rivalry. I feel there’s more bad blood with Toronto, the Yankees, Angels, or Astros, but of course, they all have rivals already. Kinda feels like they just threw the Mariners and Padres together and were like, “hey, you're rivals now, why? because you guys showed up late on the day we were picking rivals.” Let us know what you think about the “rivalry” and answer the survey or leave a comment below.
Now, let’s talk about last week. We discussed Bryce Miller's recent performances. It was a moot point because he went on the IL a few hours before I got the survey up. Still, many of you seemed to agree with me that it was indeed time to worry.
Honestly, I think an IL stint will be good for him, allowing him to rest, stretch out, and get back to 100%. With the way pitchers are being used now, it would not shock me if, in the near future, the 6-man rotation becomes the new reality. Pitchers are just throwing too hard to be able to turn around on 5 days rest, and with the pitch clock, elbows and shoulders are getting snapped left and right. On top of that it’s a total crap shoot if a guy comes back as good as he was before or gets stuck in a cycle of injury, or just isnt as good as orginally and the team moves on. I really think Bryce has a bright future with the club, so I don’t expect him to regress, and the Mariners have been very careful with their young arms so far, so I expect them to put him in the best position to succeed rather than rush him back too soon.
We also asked something a little different last week. We asked you if you thought Pete Rose deserved to be elected into the Hall of Fame, and frankly, the results were much more skewed than I expected:
I really did not expect the vote to go this way, but I was pleasantly surprised. Now I wonder what the results would be like if I asked about Bonds. Well, that's a question for another time. Answer the survey below and leave your thoughts on this week's questions in the comments!
