Morning Briefing: Mets’ Attendance Continuing to Rise

0 11

Good morning, Mets fans!

After this past weekend’s series against the Cubs, the Mets are now averaging 37,027 fans per game, which is fifth in the major leagues. Only the Dodgers (51,363), Padres (42,344), Yankees (41,714), and Phillies (41,126) rank ahead of the Amazin’s. In 2024, the Mets ranked 17th in attendance with an average of 29,484 fans, though numbers improved in the second half of the season.

Latest Mets News

The Mets rallied for two runs in the seventh inning, and after some defensive miscues in the top of the ninth inning, Pete Alonso hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to secure a 4-3 victory over Paul Skenes and the Pirates. For Alonso, it was his first walk-off RBI since he delivered one against the Rays in 2023. David Peterson went toe-to-toe with Skenes, holding Pittsburgh to five hits and two earned runs, walking three and striking out seven over six-plus innings.

Kodai Senga (4-2, 1.16 ERA) will look to keep his hot streak going against former All-Star righty Mitch Keller (1-4, 4.40 ERA) in the second game of the series. Senga currently doesn’t qualify for the ERA title, but he would be leading the NL by over half a run. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.

The Mets had three prospects ranked in MLB Pipeline’s updated top 100 list – Jett Williams (No. 51), Brandon Sproat (No. 68), and Carson Benge (No. 89). Notably, Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong were left off the rankings.

Baseball America released its latest mock draft, and the Mets are projected to select Oregon outfielder Mason Neville. The junior is currently leading the nation with 26 homers and is batting .322/.469/.831 with 51 walks against 50 strikeouts in 243 plate appearances.

Prior to Monday’s game, Isiah Kiner-Falefa got to meet Ralph Kiner‘s son, Scott, who is his second cousin. Despite being related, the two had never met.

Latest MLB News

After not playing in 2024, Evan Longoria will sign a one-day contract on June 7 to retire as a member of the Rays. Longoria is the franchise’s all-time leader in bWAR, games played, total bases, home runs, and RBIs.

The Brewers returned Brandon Woodruff from his rehab assignment but placed him on the injured list with ankle tendonitis. The issue popped up during his last rehab start, but the injury is thought to be minor.

The Diamondbacks have called up top prospect Jordan Lawlar and designated Garrett Hampson for assignment. A consensus top-10 prospect in the sport, Lawlar is batting .336/.413/.579 with six homers, 15 doubles, 13 steals in 173 plate appearances for Triple-A Reno. Additionally, the team activated Kendall Graveman from the injured list and designated José Castillo for assignment.

Ronald Acuña Jr. is set to begin a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League today. The Braves don’t know how long the former MVP will need before rejoining the major league club.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Monday that it isn’t too far-fetched that the Red Sox could trade Rafael Devers at some point. Devers recently said he doesn’t want to play first base, but is also the reigning AL Player of the Week.
