Mets Can’t Figure Out Gallen Again
A day after the Met Gala, the Mets faced Zac Gallen. New York’s hitting didn’t show much style.
The Mets (23-14) dropped a 5-1 decision Tuesday to the Diamondbacks, and Gallen (3-4), who pitched seven innings of one-run ball in Phoenix, beat the Mets for the second time in less than a week. He defeated the Mets with six innings of one-run ball last Thursday at Citi Field.
The Mets’ best chance to get to the 29-year-old righty came in the third after Pete Alonso walked with the bases loaded to give the Mets a 1-0 lead, but Starling Marte struck out to end the inning. The Mets managed only two hits off Gallen, singles by Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez. He struck out six.
The Diamondbacks (19-17) took the lead with two runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI groundouts by Josh Naylor and Geraldo Perdomo. The Arizona rally started when Randal Grichuk hit a ball between Vientos’ legs at third, which was scored a double.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added a two-run home run in the sixth off David Peterson (2-2), who gave up four runs on five hits, struck out six and walked four. He hadn’t given up more than three runs in his previous six starts. His ERA jumped to 3.52.
Brandon Nimmo (0-for-4) came up hobbling and appeared to be favoring his left leg after fielding a double off the wall in the fourth inning but stayed in the game after a visit from the trainer.
Stat of the Game
Peterson threw 104 pitches (69 strikes), and Gallen threw 101. Per SNY, Monday was the third time this season each starter threw 100 or more pitches.
Player of the Game
The rules say we must find one, so Alvarez is the pick. He went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and is slashing .314/.385/.429 in nine games since returning from injury.
On Deck
Kodai Senga (3-2, 1.38 ERA) faces RHP Merrill Kelly (3-1, 4.06 ERA) in the rubber game in the desert. The game will air on SNY and the first pitch is at 3:40 p.m. ET.
