Good morning, Mets fans!

Carlos Mendoza said Sunday that Danny Young will undergo Tommy John surgery. Young was placed on the injured list with a left elbow sprain on April 30. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on Sunday. The 30-year-old appeared in 10 games in 2025, posting a 4.32 ERA with 13 strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings.

The Mets bypassed several opportunities, going 6-for-26 with runners in scoring position and leaving 23 men on base as they were swept by the Cardinals in Sunday’s doubleheader. Blade Tidwell made his big league debut in the first game, getting tagged for six runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. The Mets rallied to cut the deficit to 6-5 and loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning, but Pete Alonso was rung up on a questionable call on a 3-2 pitch, then Brandon Nimmo flew out to center field. In the nightcap, the Mets scored four runs in the third inning, but the Cardinals responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to even up the score. The Mets got the first two men on in the fourth inning, but Juan Soto was robbed of a home run by Victor Scott II, and the Mets failed to score in 5 2/3 innings against rookie righty Michael McGreevy.

The Mets will look to snap out of their slump in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. Griffin Canning (4-1, 2.61 ERA) will look to win his fifth straight start, while Arizona will send Ryne Nelson (1-0, 5.82 ERA) to the mound in place of the injured Corbin Burnes. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 PM.

The Mets made a couple of roster moves on Sunday, appointing Austin Warren as the 27th man for the doubleheader. The team optioned Tidwell to Triple-A in between games and recalled Dedniel Núñez.

Jesse Winker departed the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader with right side discomfort and will be placed on the injured list. Winker was sent for an MRI on his oblique following the game. Starling Marte left the nightcap after four innings, but Carlos Mendoza said that he only planned on keeping him in the field for a few innings. Jared Young seems to be a likely replacement for Winker, as Brett Baty has been battling soreness in his big toe. Young has a .984 OPS in 42 plate appearances for Triple-A Syracuse and has played both corner infield and outfield positions.

2021 second-round pick Calvin Ziegler threw a bullpen session over the weekend in Port St. Lucie. Ziegler has been limited to just seven innings over the last two seasons, most recently undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024.
