Mets Suffer Another One-Run Defeat In Doubleheader Sweep

0 4

The New York Mets aimed to bounce back in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, but their pitching faltered as they failed to hold off the St. Louis Cardinals, who completed the sweep with a 5-4 win and secured the weekend series by taking two of three from New York.

Tylor Megill struggled on the mound, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out six and issuing three walks. Even with early run support, Megill couldn’t contain the Cardinals’ offense. Max Kranick later surrendered a go-ahead run on a Victor Scott II single in the sixth that ultimately decided the game. Scott also made a highlight-reel catch, robbing Juan Soto of a three-run homer in the fourth. Ryne Stanek and Edwin Díaz kept the deficit from growing with scoreless outings.

The Mets’ bats were hot early, plating four runs off Cardinals starter Andre Pallante behind RBI singles from Pete Alonso, Starling Marte, and Francisco Alvarez. Marte and Francisco Lindor also chipped in with stolen bases, but once Pallante exited and Michael McGreevy entered, the offense was shutdown, alongside stellar defense by the Cardinals. McGreevy tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and collecting the win in his season debut.

New York went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position, and with their two losses on the day, saw the Cardinals snap a nine-game skid against them. Starling Marte, who started the game in the outfield, was removed during the game. The Mets later confirmed it was not due to injury but part of a load-management plan.

Player of the Game: Starling Marte

Before exiting the game for load management reasons, Starling Marte had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Marte’s hit in the top of the third helped put the Mets back in the lead after going down early.

On Deck

The Mets head west to Chase Field in Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks. Griffin Canning (4-1, 2.61 ERA) will look to stop the bleeding on the mound for the Mets, while Arizona tosses out Ryne Nelson (1-0, 5.82 ERA) to toe the slab. First pitch will be at 9:40 pm ET and will be broadcast on SNY and Audacy Mets Radio 880 AM.
