Starting up the weekend with some news from around baseball.
Good morning folks, and happy Saturday! Here’s what you should know today as you get your day started.
In Mariners news...
- The Mariners are adding Panos and Mary Panay to their ownership group. It’s unclear exactly how large their stake in the team is or how much wealth they bring to the table.
- The Mariners announced their minor league award winners for the month of April.
- You can put down your pitchforks — Andrés Muñoz was officially named the American League Reliever of the Month for April.
- Right-hander Sauryn Lao cleared waivers and has been optioned to Tacoma.
- Davy Andrews at Fangraphs tried to figure out just how close that baseball got to hitting Julio Rodríguez during his slide into third base on Thursday.
- Scott Hunter breaks down exactly how the Mariners found Ben Williamson, a small-school senior-sign third baseman.
Around the league...
- Mike Trout has been placed on the injured list with a bone bruise on his knee.
- Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm, Jr. is headed to the injured list with an oblique strain.
- The Orioles got some good news on the injury front, with right-handers Zach Eflin and Andrew Kittredge heading on rehab assignments. The team remains optimistic that ace Grayson Rodríguez will pitch sometime this year, but aren’t making any promises.
- Phillies reliever José Alvarado was flattered by the kid who went viral for imitating him in the stands, and got to meet up with him before last night’s game.
- The Morehead City Marlins, a Coastal Plans League summer ball team in North Carolina, announced their alternate Identity — the Crystal Coast Booty Divers. It remains remarkable to me that the stock for public horniness just continues to soar.
- Your baseball history lesson for the day!
- On Sarah Langs’ birthday yesterday, Doug Glanville wrote about why her passion for the sport inspires everyone.
Anders’ picks...
- The Seattle Kraken employ two full-time librarians in their organization. KUOW’s Katie Campbell talked to these two women about their unusual roles for the team.
- Christopher Crawford, a beloved member of the Mariners fan community, is asking for help covering critical medical expenses. If you are in a giving mood and can spare some change, consider contributing to his GoFundMe (yes, this was created last year, but he recently shared an update on social media that further help is needed).
