Tylor Megill Ties Career-High in Ks vs. Phillies
Tylor Megill said it’s a great time to be a Met, and it’s easy to see why. The Mets have won five in a row, they lead the division by three games and are tied for the best record in baseball at 16-7.
Still, after matching a career-high with 10 strikeouts in a 5-4 victory over the Phillies on Monday, a reporter asked Megill what makes this year special anyway.

“We’ve got a lot of really good players, really good clubhouse,” he said. “I just think a lot of things stick. We have a lot of fun. Everyone’s pulling for each other. No selfishness. … And at the end of the day, we’re just trying to win one ballgame a day and going on from there.”
Megill has done his part, with a 1.09 ERA in five starts, 30 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings pitched. In the win Monday, he provided plenty of highlights. He struck out Bryce Harper in the first inning. He fanned the side in the second and the fourth. He got himself in trouble in the third, but struck out Kyle Schwarber swinging with the bases loaded to end the threat.
When Carlos Mendoza pulled him with one out in the sixth, the 35,340 at Citi Field on a weeknight in April rewarded him with a standing ovation. It’s also been a great time to catch a game in Queens. The Mets are 10-1 at home and sixth in home attendance.
Megill, who had to battle for a spot in the rotation during spring training, now places fourth in MLB in ERA. (Kodai Senga and his 0.79 ERA would rank third and bump Megill to fifth, but he misses qualifying by 1/3 of an inning.) The Mets’ team ERA is 2.43, first in MLB.
So it’s been a great time to pitch for New York and Megill, of course, hopes the good times roll through October.
“Getting our feet wet in the playoffs and making a push really motivates I’d say everyone who ends up getting there to, you know, want to chase that again and go back out there and obviously go win a World Series.”
