Mets Complete Four Game Sweep Of St. Louis

0 8

The New York Mets jumped into the storage closet and busted out the brooms as they swept the St. Louis Cardinals out of Citi Field 7-3 and improved to 15-7 on the season. This is good for first place in the National League East.

Clay Holmes continued his transition into the starting rotation and delivered another stellar outing, tossing six innings with six strikeouts, surrendering just four hits, two walks, and one earned run. This marked the first time Holmes completed six full innings in a Mets uniform. In the field, Brandon Nimmo made a highlight-reel play by robbing Jordan Walker of a home run in left.

Danny Young entered in the seventh to relieve Holmes and struck out two, though he allowed two runners to reach base. José Buttó came on to finish the inning but gave up a game-tying double to Thomas Saggese before escaping the jam. Buttó remained in for the next frame, where he struck out two batters.

The minor hiccups on the mound were overshadowed by an explosive offensive display from the Mets. Francisco Lindor sparked the lineup, going 3-for-5 with a leadoff homer. Pete Alonso finished 1-for-5, but his lone hit was an RBI single in the fifth. Brandon Nimmo later broke the tie in the seventh with an RBI single of his own, while Juan Soto drove in three on the day.

Soto’s productive afternoon included a sacrifice fly in the third and a crushing two-run double in the eighth. Tyrone Taylor also chipped in with an RBI hit in the three-run eighth inning. Ryne Stanek came on for the ninth, and despite allowing a run, closed the door and sealed the sweep.

Player of the Game: Juan Soto

Juan Soto had his best game at Citi Field so far, driving in three, which included a huge late-game two-run double to put the Mets ahead 7-3. Soto’s approach at the plate seems to be improving and today’s performance could be the start of the Mets superstar coming to life.

On Deck

The Mets are back in action Monday as they open a series at Citi Field against the Philadelphia Phillies. It marks the Phillies’ first return to Queens since they were eliminated by the Mets in five games during last year’s National League Divisional Series.

Tylor Megill (2-2, 1.40 ERA) will take the ball for New York, aiming to build on the team’s current momentum. He’ll be opposed by Aaron Nola (0-4, 6.65 ERA) for Philadelphia. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm ET, with coverage available on SNY and Audacy Mets Radio 880 AM.
