Mets Minors Recap: Matt Allan Fans Five After Six-Year Hiatus

0 2

Exceptional pitching in Brooklyn helped complete a three-game sweep. The Syracuse Mets dropped four games out of a six-game home set with Scranton/Wilkes Barre that concluded Sunday, and St. Lucie lost two of three over its opening weekend. However, Matt Allan’s resurgence was the talk of the town. Double-A Binghamton was rained out Sunday after splitting its first two games.

A trio of players with MLB experience led the offense. Meneses, 32, who hit 29 home runs over the last three seasons with the Nationals, continued his hot start with three doubles. He’s 10-for-30 on the season with a 1.012 OPS. Singleton, 33, hit 13 homers for the Astros last year, and Azocar, 28, posted a .516 OPS with the Padres last season.

Waddell, a 30-year-old southpaw who pitched in South Korea for the last three seasons, tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings, but a faulty bullpen leaked eight runs in four innings. Núñez, a pleasant surprise as a rookie for the Mets last year, served up a home run.

Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (1-2) 0, Jupiter Hammerheads (2-1) 6

Box Score

Matt Allan made his first appearance in a pro game in six years, a story that made national headlines. He was excellent, striking out five over 2 2/3 scoreless innings and throwing 28 of 44 pitches for strikes. Allan pitched in the minors in 2019 after the Mets selected him in the third round but suffered major setbacks after the 2020 minor league season was canceled due to COVID-19. He then underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021 and continued to suffer setback after setback until now.

Marco Vargas had two of St. Lucie’s three hits, all singles, as Hammerhead’s pitching had its way, striking out 10. A.J. Ewing stole his second base of the year.
