Fall dmg vs. dmg resistance.
Fall damage should be 1d6 per 10 feet, in 5e; it's really quite survivable for adventurers.... your average commoner might die from a 10 foot fall if they're unlucky, but even a level 5 adventurer is likely to survive a 30 foot fall, if they're healthy beforehand. The damage is meant to cap out at 20d6 - or a fall of 200 feet, which should average around ~70 damage, which is enough to kill most adventurers up to the middle bracket of play.However... that cap does mean that a lot of things become readily survivable for experienced adventurers, that honestly shouldn't; a certain dive off an 800 foot cliff onto sharp rocks, for example, would be no sweat for a level 12 druid to survive, if that cap is observed. If we wanted to be a little more realistic about this, an averaged sized medium humanoid would reach terminal velocity after about 1500 feet (which you would fall in about 12 seconds, or two rounds) - so this would be the damage cap, since they aren't going to take any *more* damage...
