Mets Offense Struggles in 4-2 Loss to Marlins

0 4

The Mets (2-3) fell to the Marlins (4-3) by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday evening at LoanDepot Park. The Mets’ offense managed just five hits from four players all evening and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Kodai Senga had a solid outing, allowing just two earned runs with eight strikeouts.

However, two unearned runs stemming from a fielding error by Francisco Lindor, combined with poor hitting, cost the Mets the game. It was just Lindor’s fourth career game with two errors.

Senga (0-1, 3.60 ERA) made his first start of the season, after being limited just four appearances last year – two starts and a relief outing during the playoffs, and one start during the regular season – while nursing shoulder and calf injuries. The right-hander tossed five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits, with eight strikeouts and a walk.

Senga got off to a rough start, allowing a leadoff double in the bottom of the first, followed by a two-run homer by Kyle Stowers to give Miami an early 2-0 lead.

New York quickly responded, as Brandon Nimmo launched a solo home run in the second for his second of the season to cut the deficit. The club tied it up in the third when Luisangel Acuna notched a ground-rule double, and Lindor, fresh off welcoming in his third child (and first son) this week, knocked in a base hit to even the score.

Senga allowed two more runs in the fourth. The inning started with a fielding error by Lindor that put a runner on first. After a walk, a two-RBI double put Miami back on top, 4-2.

Max Kranick, a new addition to the Mets who hadn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2022 prior to this season, entered in relief and tossed three scoreless innings with a strikeout.

The Mets’ bats went silent after the third inning, as 12 consecutive hitters were retired following Lindor’s RBI single. In the ninth, Juan Soto worked a walk, and Pete Alonso reached on a botched double play attempt. With one out, Nimmo singled up the middle to put the tying runs on base for Mark Vientos. However, Vientos popped out, and Jesse Winker grounded out to end the game.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Max Kranick earns Tuesday’s honor with three perfect frames in his second appearance as a Met and his second MLB outing since 2022.
