Mets Opening Day Roster Taking Shape
With three Grapefruit League games remaining, Carlos Mendoza gave the media an update on the Mets roster heading into the 2025 season.
Chris Devenski, Génesis Cabrera, Jakson Reetz, Donovan Walton, and José Ureña were all sent down to Triple-A, failing to break camp with the major league roster.

Walton and Cabrera had the most buzz around their name heading into spring, but both came up short. Cabrera, being a rare lefty in the fold for the Mets roster, could have made the team with a strong spring, but pitched to a 8.31 ERA in 4 1/3 innings. Walton hit .176 in 34 spring at-bats, and the emergence of Brett Baty‘s defensive versatility might have pushed him down the depth chart.
Despite being sent to Triple-A Syracuse, Ureña opted to stay with the Mets. The righty had an opt-out in his contract and could have left.
Meanwhile, Reed Garrett, José Buttó, and Danny Young were all notified they had spots in the major league bullpen to start the 2025 season. Garrett and Buttó were mainstays last year in the ‘pen, but Young’s strong spring solidified a sophomore season in Queens. The lefty put up a 2.25 ERA in four spring innings.
Mike Puma of the New York Post also gave some insight into Dedniel Núñez and A.J. Minter. Both relievers had late starts to the spring, and with Young in Queens, one or both might miss some time to begin the season.
