Mariners Moose Tracks, 3/16/25: Shohei Ohtani, Jon Gray, Slick Watts

In Mariners news...

• Yesterday was a bit of a slow news day in terms of the Mariners, but one roster spot battle for Opening Day became a little clearer, with Tyler Locklear being optioned to Tacoma.

Around the league...

• Ohtani went downtown in his recent return to Tokyo.

• Shohei Ohtani is already in season form for the Dodgers, but it looks as though Mookie Betts may not be ready in time for Opening Day, battling an illness.
• Texas starter Jon Gray will miss time with a fractured right wrist. This news is coupled with bad news about another Rangers pitcher, Cody Bradford, who will be shut down for three more weeks dealing with an elbow issue.
• Injury updates were provided in regards to Blue Jay and former Mariner Erik Swanson, who is likely to start the season on the IL.
• Detroit outfielder Parker Meadows has been ruled out for Opening Day, dealing with a nerve injury.
• Continuing today’s theme, health updates were also provided for some Mets players, namely Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Alvarez. ($)
• Oh look, another injury update. In this case, it is that Matt Waldron of the San Diego Padres is expected to miss the start of the season dealing with a left oblique strain.
• What’s this? News that’s NOT an injury? Who knew! The Detroit Tigers are reportedly having Spencel Torkelson prepare to do some outfield work. I already thought Torkelson had “future Mariner at the trade deadline” written all over him, but an infielder converted to an outfielder? I’m surprised he isn’t wearing Northwest Green already.

• The final whistle has blown for a Seattle Supersonics legend with the passing of Slick Watts at 73. A tremendous loss for the Seattle community, our condolences go out to all of Watts’ friends and loved ones.
