Elian Peña

Overview

The young Elian Peña makes his debut on Metsmerized’s prospect rankings at No. 7—a $5 million signing bonus and belief he was the best non-Roki Sasaki international free agent of his class will do that. He was enough of a prospect to register at-bats in the Nicaraguan Winter League two years ago at just 15 years old.

Signing out of the Dominican Republic, the 17-year-old hits lefty and mans shortstop, where he should be able to remain long-term as a solid defender. He’s currently listed at 5’10” and 180 pounds, but he’ll surely grow into a larger frame as he ages and enters the Mets’ system.

When Peña signed, Mike Mayer reported what the Mets think of the youngster:

“Scouts I’ve talked to raved about Peña’s knowledge of the game and hard work. He’s known as a leader on the field, and the Mets love his makeup. They also rave about his plate discipline, which is way beyond his years and one of the best they’ve seen in recent IFA classes. As a left-handed hitter, he impressed early on with his ability to hit left-handed pitching at such a young age.”

Baseball America noted that Peña has “a smooth, explosive lefthanded swing that remains compact and stays on plane through the hitting zone for an extended time,” noting he could have 25-30 homer power. Check out his swing here.

2025 Outlook

It’s time for Peña to get his feet wet. For perspective on how young he is, Peña was born a month after the Mets blew the division in 2007. (Sorry.) He’s not expected to reach the majors until halfway through the next presidency.

Peña is currently assigned to DSL Mets Orange. It’s pretty rare for a prospect younger than 18 to come stateside, so he’ll likely spend the full year in the Dominican Summer League. After that, pending how he develops this year, it will be interesting to see if he takes part in the Dominican Winter League and how quickly the Mets move on his development. For now, though, it’s a waiting game. It’ll be a long time until Peña has any impact at the MLB level, but 2025 is the first step.
