Networking Luncheon Fosters Professional Growth for Comm 426 Students
Students enrolled in Comm 426 – Advanced Public Speaking, with Dr. Sara Pitts, had the unique opportunity to connect with college faculty and administration, and local community members during a networking luncheon held on February 27 in Cushing Hall. The event offered students valuable real-world insights and the chance to refine their interview skills in a supportive, interactive environment.
Throughout the luncheon, students engaged in meaningful conversations with professionals from various organizations. They practiced essential interview questions, such as discussing their leadership experiences, sharing strategies for conflict resolution, and highlighting their key accomplishments. Beyond the prepared questions, students demonstrated initiative by researching attendees’ organizations and tailoring their inquiries to foster deeper dialogue.
Alice Lloyd College is dedicated to equipping students with the skills they need to succeed in the workforce, emphasizing not only technical knowledge but also the soft skills that employers value — such as communication, adaptability, and teamwork. This commitment is reflected in that 95% of graduates are enrolled in graduate school or employed within six months of graduation, and 83% return to Appalachia to work and serve their communities.
The event not only allowed students to practice public speaking and interview techniques but also offered professionals a chance to share career advice and provide personalized feedback. Participants completed feedback forms to help students identify strengths and areas for improvement as they prepare to enter the job market.
When reflecting on the day, Dr. Pitts said, “Events like this are one of my favorite parts about being at ALC. People across campus and in the community are willing to collaborate to help students practice practical skills, allowing us to bridge the gap between classroom learning and “real-world” experience. Students left Thursday better prepared to be the leaders Mrs. Lloyd once envisioned.”
With many students set to graduate in May or within the next year, the luncheon served as a pivotal moment to refine their abilities and build connections that may shape their professional journeys. The event underscored the power of mentorship and the impact of experiential learning in preparing students for success beyond college.
