Morning Briefing: Brandon Sproat Set for First Spring Outing

Good morning, Mets fans!

Top Mets pitching prospect Brandon Sproat is in line to make his first spring training start this season against the Washington Nationals on Friday afternoon. The 24-year-old recorded a 3.40 ERA over 24 outings and 116 1/3 innings between High-A Brooklyn, Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse in 2024.

The Mets shut out the Houston Astros 5-0 in their spring meeting on Thursday. Clay Holmes, Griffin Canning and Max Kranick threw a combined 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts while both Ryan Clifford and Brett Baty homered.

The Mets have added veteran right-hander José Ureña on a minor-league deal, per Tim Healey of Newsday. Ureña confirmed the signing from the clubhouse. For more on this signing, check out our piece on Ureña.

Jay Horwitz paid tribute to Sarah Seaver, daughter of Tom Seaver, who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Horwitz described her as having a “bigger-than-life personality” and someone who always made him laugh.

Former Met Bret Saberhagen sat down with Horwitz to reminisce about his time in New York and discuss his and his wife Kandace’s efforts to help cancer patients with medical expenses.

Mets coach Rafael Fernandez is earning high praise within the organization. Francisco Alvarez and Starling Marte both spoke about his influence, with Marte calling him a “huge asset,” per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

1975: The Mets purchase Dave Kingman from the San Francisco Giants for $150,000. Exactly six years later, the Mets reacquired Kingman from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Steve Henderson. Kingman’s 154 home runs are the fifth-most in team history.

2006: The Mets sign Pedro Feliciano. From 2006 to 2010, he had a 3.09 ERA and led the majors with 408 games pitched. During this period, Feliciano appeared in more than half of New York’s contests. His 92 appearances in 2010 are a single-season franchise record.

2014: David Wright is named the “Face of MLB”. Wright narrowly beats Oakland A’s infielder Eric Sogard after receiving 51% of the vote in the final round.
