Nick Madrigal Likely Done for Season

Updated Post: Feb. 28 at 9:44 am

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced that infielder Nick Madrigal is likely undergoing season-ending surgery on his fractured left shoulder. The Mets signed Madrigal during the offseason to potentially be their utility man and had been giving him time at shortstop this spring, a position he hadn’t played at the major league level.

Appearing on MLB Network, Mednoza mentioned Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty and Donovan Walton as names to watch for the Mets’ utility role to begin the season.

The Mets received utility infielder Nick Madrigal‘s MRI results Monday morning, showing a fracture in his left shoulder. He left the game in the first inning Sunday after falling on his shoulder on a play in the infield.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB, Madrigal will go for a CT scan next for more info. However, Carlos Mendoza noted Madrigal will be out for “a long time.”

Madrigal’s spot on the roster is now up for grabs, with Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña, Donovan Walton and Jared Young all in play for the role.

New York Mets utility infielder Nick Madrigal had an extremely tough start to spring training. On Sunday, Madrigal left the game in the first inning against the Washington Nationals.

Madrigal made a running, barehanded play on a slowly hit ball and during his follow through on his throw to first base, Madrigal fell on his shoulder. After the game, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed to media that he dislocated his shoulder. Madrigal is set to receive a MRI to confirm the severity of the injury.

On January 31, the Mets signed the 27-year-old former Chicago White Sox and Cubs infielder to a one-year deal. The contract is a split deal, which means he would earn a different figure at either the minor league or major-league level.

Madrigal has five seasons of major-league experience under his belt. He owns a career .274 batting average, but has hit for little-to-no power, posting a career .667 OPS. He struggled mightily last season for the Cubs, posting a career-low .221 batting average and surprisingly struggled defensively. Madrigal is all about contact, barely swinging and missing, and also having a good eye at the plate. He also typically plays really strong defense.

The former fourth-overall pick projected to fill the Jose Iglesias role from last season. A utility infielder who proves strong defense. Madrigal would also provide a boost on the bases, as his sprint speed has typically been over the league’s 50th percentile. However, with this injury, a hole seems to have reopened. If that is the case, would a reunion with Iglesias make sense?
