Sean Manaea Expected to Start Season on Injured List

0 1

Coming into the 2025 season, the one thing that could hamper the New York Mets was their starting pitching and depth. After only a few weeks into spring training, New York has already lost two starting pitchers to injury. Both will begin the season on the injured list. The first was Frankie Montas, and now it’s Sean Manaea

Speaking to the media, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Manaea suffered an oblique strain and will be shut down for a few weeks. He will now start the season on the injured list. Mendoza said it could take “seven, 14. 21 days to heal”. He will begin throwing again once he’s symptom-free. Will Sammon of The Athletic reports the Mets expect Manaea’s injury to be short-term. For now, they expect him back in April. The injury doesn’t change the Mets’ pitching plans.

Afterward, Manaea spoke to reporters and said he didn’t feel the injury until he arrived at camp. Talking about trying to pitch through the injury, Manaea said:

“Nothing really got any better, it didn’t really get worse, it just kind of plateaued. The worst part is it just never got any better over the last couple of weeks. I’ve been throwing, been pitching, and recovery hasn’t been the greatest in between.”

One of the primary free agent signings by the Mets this past offseason, Manaea was expected to begin the season as New York’s ace. Or at least one of its top pitchers in the rotation, along with Kodai Senga. With Montas also on the injured list, who the Mets also signed in free agency, the Mets starting pitching rotation has taken two hits with a month to go before the start of the regular season.

A combination of Tylor Megill, Paul Blackburn and Griffin Canning will likely take Manaea and Montas’ spots to open the season.
