Looking Ahead At The Potential Post-2025 Free Agent Class
It’s never too early to look ahead, right? With the 2025 season slowly approaching, why not look at what the free agent market will look like after the 2025 season concludes? Below are some of the key names you’ll likely see hit the open market at the conclusion of this upcoming season.
The pending class will be headlined by two huge names; Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kyle Tucker. The currently only 25-year-old Guerrero Jr. is coming off the second-best season of his career in 2024 and will surely want to post something similar in 2025 in hopes of resetting the first basemen market. Meanwhile, the currently 28-year-old Tucker was limited to only 277 at-bats in 2024 due to injuries. He was then shipped to Chicago where he will likely play his one and only season with the Cubs before hitting the market.
Elsewhere positionally, J.T. Realmuto, Josh Naylor, Luis Arraez, Bo Bichette, Kyle Schwarber, and Marcell Ozuna are also all slated to become free agents. Others such as Yandy Díaz, Rhys Hoskins, Ha-Seong Kim, Cody Bellinger, and Joc Pederson, among others, can be free agents as well, pending their respective opt-outs and resolutions on team options.
Pitching-wise, the top of the starter market has quite a bit of depth. Dylan Cease, Zac Gallen, Framber Valdez, Michael King, Zach Eflin, and Ranger Suárez head the market. There are also several player who have some type of option or opt-out as well. These include Seth Lugo, Shota Imanaga, Brandon Woodruff, among others. There are also several d0wn-the-rotation options in Chris Bassitt, Walker Buehler, Nestor Cortes, Merrill Kelly, due to hit the open market, among several others.
The relief pitcher market is robust. Devin Williams, Ryan Helsley, Raisel Iglesias, and Ryan Pressly will all be free agents. New York Mets star closer Edwin Díaz has an opt-out in his deal as well, while the Mariners flamethrower Andrés Muñoz has a club option, and Padres Robert Suarez has an opt-out. Like every reliever market, there is a long, long list of several other pending free agents.
For those looking for a New York Mets-specific list of potential free agents, you can read about heir payroll outlook and potential free agents here. The most notable potential free agents are Starling Marte, Jesse Winker, Griffin Canning, and Paul Blackburn. As mentioned above, Díaz does have an opt-out in his deal, as well as A.J. Minter and Frankie Montas.
For a team that is constantly near the top in spending money, the New York Mets will have several opportunities to improve their roster via free agency after the season. The class is of course headlined by two big fish in Guerrero Jr. and Tucker, however, there are also several other very valuable pieces that can hit the market as well.
