Report: Mets Showing Interest in Max Scherzer Reunion

0 4

According to On SI’s Pat Ragazzo, the New York Mets are showcasing “some level of interest” in right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer, who threw for teams at Cressey Sports Performance’s pro day earlier this week as he looks to secure a deal in free agency.

Alongside the Mets, Ragazzo reported that the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox were among the other clubs present.

Scherzer, of course, spent parts of two seasons in Queens after signing a three-year, $130 million deal in November 2021. Over that stretch, he recorded a 3.02 ERA, 3.50 FIP and 7.4 bWAR in 42 starts and 253 innings. Amidst a disappointing season for the team, the Mets traded him to the Texas Rangers for Luisangel Acuña at the 2023 deadline as part of a sell-off that also included the likes of Justin Verlander and David Robertson.

Scherzer would proceed to help Texas win its first World Series in franchise history. He returned in 2024 after picking up his player option, though he only made nine starts to the tune of a 3.95 ERA while dealing with a number of different injuries.

At 40-years-old, the future Hall of Famer and three-time Cy Young Award winner is looking to finish his illustrious career off on the right note. The Mets have already signed Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes and Griffin Canning this offseason, but perhaps they could find room for one more addition in their rotation.
