Tune Squad win Baseball5 Aarhus Open in Denmark

The Dutch club Tune Squad defeated Roundnet Aarhus in the final, 8-7, to win the first Aarhus Baseball5 Open.

Roundnet* Aarhus, who were Baseball5 beginners and the tournament's underdogs, defeated the Danish champions Aarhus Havoc, 20-2, in the semifinals on their way to the final. Havoc took a 15-game winning streak into the tournament.

"They had a very special hitting technique," commented tournament promoter Philip Spielmann of the Aarhus Baseball Softball Club. "They hit the ball much harder than the other teams thought possible."

According to the organizers, the seven-team event is the biggest Baseball5 tournament played in Denmark to date.

"The atmosphere has been fantastic throughout the day," commented Spielmann. "It made a big impression on me to see how many children seemed to find Baseball5 entertaining, given how fast-paced the game was."

The placement in the Aarhus Open qualified Roundnet Aarhus, Aarhus Havoc and Jutland Krakens to the Danish National Championship, set to be played in Nyborg on February 9. Vandals Vintage and Team Lycra will also compete.

* Roundnet, also known as Spikeball, is a sport created in 1989 by American cartoonist and toy-maker Jeff Knurek and inspired by concepts from volleyball.
