Morning Briefing: Blue Jays Showing Interest in Max Scherzer

Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet reported Sunday that the Blue Jays are interested in Max Scherzer. The three-time Cy Young Award winner spent much of 2024 on the injured list, posting a 3.95 ERA with 40 strikeouts against 10 walks in 43 1/3 innings. He also allowed seven home runs.

Former Mets skipper Jeff Torborg passed away Sunday at the age of 83. A native of New Jersey, Torborg was a defensive-minded catcher during his playing career and caught three no-hitters – Sandy Koufax‘s perfect game, Nolan Ryan‘s first no-hitter, and the only no-no of Bill Singer‘s career. Torborg was named AL Manager of the Year for the White Sox in 1990 and managed the Mets in 1992 and 1993.

The Dodgers have struck once again this offseason, signing All-Star lefty Tanner Scott to a four-year deal worth $72 million. Scott had his second straight terrific season in 2024, posting a 1.75 ERA with 84 strikeouts and 22 saves in 72 innings. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Blue Jays were in the mix for Scott, while Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated reported that the Cubs were the lefty’s preferred destination, but Chicago wasn’t willing to offer a four-year deal. Ragazzo added that the Dodgers had a four-year offer for Scott for several weeks.

1984: The White Sox claim Tom Seaver off waivers from the Mets as compensation for the loss of pitcher Dennis Lamp. Seaver had a 3.55 ERA in 231 innings in 1983, but Frank Cashen left the 39-year-old unprotected under the assumption that no team would claim him.
1994: Bob Murphy is announced as the winner of the Ford C. Frick Award. The original voice of the Mets, Murphy spent 42 seasons behind the microphone for the team.
