Jose Siri, Huascar Brazobán Turn In Strong Winter League Showings

0 4

Two New York Mets teammates, Jose Siri and Huascar Brazobán, like many major leaguers, played winter ball this offseason. Each played in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) for Gigantes del Cibao. Unfortunately, at 22-27, Gigantes did not make the postseason and their season conclude.

Siri, himself, one of the newest New York Mets, had himself a nice LIDOM season. In total, Siri got 50 at-bats across 17 games. He went 13-for-50 with five extra-base hits (four doubles, one home run) t0 go along with nine stolen bases; getting caught only once. Siri did strike out 16 times, to only seven walks, something that is a strong describer of his career thus far. All in all, he posted a .260/.356/.400 slash line; the .756 OPS ranked fifth on his team among those with at least 50 at-bats.

The above-average offense was certainly nice, however, as he is more known for in the major leagues, his defense in the LIDOM was unsurprisingly special. Throughout his 17 games, he made several sparkling plays in center field. A sign of things to come when he patrols the outfielder for the Mets this season.

Siri is an important piece for the Mets this upcoming season. All signs point to a split between Tyrone Taylor and Siri in center field. Both Siri and Taylor play elite defense and have had even platoon splits throughout their respective careers. However, Taylor’s career OPS (.734) signifies he is indeed the more better rounded player (Siri’s career OPS is .674).

Meanwhile, Huascar Brazobán, who disappointed after coming over from the Miami Marlins in 2024, appeared in 11 games for Gigantes. Across these 11 games, Brazobán threw 9 2/3 innings posting a 3.72 ERA. He only allowed three hits and struck out nine, but walked three and hit another batter with a pitch.

Overall, it was a solid winter for Brazobán, who will be fighting for a major-league roster spot come spring training. As mentioned, after the trade with Miami, Brazobán posted a 5.14 ERA across 21 innings for the Mets. However, prior to that, he had a 2.93 ERA for Miami across 30 2/3 innings before the deal. Overall, his ERA and FIP with Miami were both strong; 3.56 and 3.62, respectively. Hopefully, the struggles with the Mets in 2024 was just due to the extreme in-season scenery adjustment and he can be a legit contributory for New York in 2025.
