Do teams ever do home/away platoons? Should they?

0 4

Many MLB teams employ platoons based on how well their batter faces left or right handed pitching. It's common, platoons are a thing . But do any teams platoon players based on how well they do at home and away? Should they?

One can't platoon simply because a batter hits worse at T-Mobile. Most batters hit far worse at T-Mobile. But what if that batter hits particularly poorly at T-Mobile, but quite well at other ballparks. I'm talking about Dylan Moore. His home batting stats are atrocious. In 2023, his OPS was .614. In 2024 it was .603.Not good. Not worthy of starting. But what if his offense outside of T-Mobile was particularly good? Was it? It strikes me that it was. In 2023, away from T-Mobile, Dylan Moore had an OPS of ..831. In 2024, it was .840. Very respectable for a middle infielder.

I'd rather see the Mariners either trade for, or sign as a free agent a solid hitting second baseman, and keep Dylan Moore in the utility role, But if they don't do that, it doesn't seem like it would be such a bad idea if they played Dylan Moore at second when they're out of town. And find someone who hits okay at T-Mobile to play second when they're home.

Am I missing something? Are the sample sizes too small?

From my point of view, if I were in Jerry or Justin's shoes, and I knew I was allotted a too little amount of money to spend, I'd probably re-sign Justin Turner to DH and play some first, maybe do that Dylan Moore platoon at second, and trade for a solid hitting third baseman. This seems like a potentially realistic scenario, based on the purse strings.

I hope I'm wrong, and they spend significantly more money than has been indicated as available to spend. Go Mariners!
