Morning Briefing: Reds’ Nick Martinez to Accept Qualifying Offer

Reds right-hander Nick Martinez is accepting the $21.05 million qualifying offer, according to Francys Romero. Martinez appeared in 42 games, 16 of which were starts, and turned in a 3.10 ERA with 116 strikeouts against 18 walks over 142 1/3 innings. He was named the National League Pitcher of the Month in September, posting a sparkling 0.83 ERA with 30 strikeouts against just four walks in 32 2/3 innings.

1966: The Mets remove the interim tag and name Wes Westrum the second manager in franchise history. A former All-Star catcher, Westrum took over for Casey Stengel in the summer of 1965 after the Hall of Famer fractured his hip.
1985: Dwight Gooden unanimously wins the NL Cy Young Award. The 20-year-old pitched one of the most dominant seasons in history, going 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA with 268 strikeouts over 276 2/3 innings, which included 16 complete games.
1994: The Mets send Jeromy Burnitz and Joe Roa to Cleveland in exchange for hurlers Dave Mlicki, Paul Byrd, and Jerry Dipoto. Mlicki missed all of 1994 due to injury, while Byrd has yet to reach the majors.
