FanPost Friday: Your favorite Dave Sims moments and stories
As rumored a few weeks ago, announcer Dave Sims is taking the gig with the New York Yankees. We wish him all the best. Let’s reminiscence, shall we?
Hello and welcome back to FanPost Friday. There’s a fedora-or-other-fancy-hat-sized hole in my heart today as the news was made official yesterday that longtime Mariners announcer Dave Sims is taking his talents to New York City to replace John Sterling at the main play-by-play radio announcer on WFAN. All of us on staff at LL have been big appreciators of Sims’s work with the Mariners. He was a delightful guest on our podcast years ago when Matthew Roberson was the main host and he’s always had a very accessible and friendly online presence to all Mariners fans.
While the first thing anyone would criticize about Dave’s radio and TV presence is his tendency to over react to pop-ups in big moments, I can hardly hold the man’s genuine enthusiasm for wanting to see something good happen to these Seattle Mariners against him. It could frustrating sometimes, that brief glimpse of false hope before familiar disappointment set in, but that’s also just baseball in a nut shell. For me personally, Dave’s joy while calling a big moment always shined through in such a sincere and heartfelt way that it always far, far outweighed any faults in his broadcasting skills. I will miss his presence on the radio and TV calls in the coming season and beyond dearly. I’ll just be over here muttering, “Oh, bruuuuu-therrrr” to myself every time the Mariners strike out with two runners on and two outs.
But, as promised, we want to hear about your favorite Dave Sims moments and stories from his 18 seasons calling Mariners games. I’ll just drop this incredibly well done video here first by the Mariners featuring a certain other well-known Dave. Get the tissues ready.

Whew. I mean, he’s been with the team the entirety of my adult fanhood of the Mariners, more or less. Tough to see him go, but I am genuinely happy for him for landing such a high-profile job, getting the recognition he deserves, and the chance to call some exciting baseball in the coming seasons with the Yankees. Y’all better treat him well in New York City, or we’ll welcome him right back.
All right, time to weigh in. Tell us your favorite Sims call or any fun stories or interactions you had with him over the years.
Have a great weekend, folks.
