Mets Minors: Jett Williams Reaches Base Three Times
With the minor league season ending this weekend, one of the biggest things for Mets fans to watch is how Jett Williams finishes up what has been mostly a lost season due to injury. June wrist surgery looked like it might end the season for him, but he was able to return on Aug. 21.
It was a struggle for Williams early in his return to action for the first time since April. He had a .721 OPS in five rehab games for Low-A St. Lucie before posting a .403 OPS in 11 games for Double-A Binghamton. Despite the struggles, the Mets wanted to get Williams as many at-bats as possible by promoting him to Triple-A Syracuse after Binghamton’s season concluded last weekend.
The 20-year-old reached base three times on Thursday in his third game with Syracuse. He had a single and two walks while picking up his first Triple-A stolen base. The young on-base machine has gone 4-for-11 with four walks and three doubles in three games with Syracuse.
Defensively, Williams has played shortstop for all three of those contests. He also played second base in two games for Binghamton last week and saw time in center field once before his injury.
- SS Jett Williams: 1-for-3, 2 BB, R, SB (1.169 OPS)
- RF Drew Gilbert: 0-for-5 (.654 OPS)
- 3B Yolmer Sánchez: 2-for-3, HBP, 3B, RBI, SB (.741 OPS)
- CF José Azocar: 2-for-4, SB, 2B (1.018 OPS)
Azocar, recently claimed off waivers from the San Diego Padres, has a 1.018 OPS in 11 games with Syracuse and has reached base safely in 10. Brett Baty had the night off after returning from his fractured finger on Wednesday.
- RHP Brandon Sproat (7.53 ERA) 2 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), 0 BB, 2 K
- RHP Justin Jarvis (5.98 ERA) 4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
- RHP Wilkin Ramos (5.94 ERA) 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
- RHP Trey McLoughlin (3.38 ER) 1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
The big news here is Sproat is returning to get one more start in his first professional season. He had previously been placed on the development list –a way for teams to gain a roster spot without using the injured list — on Sept. 10.
Syracuse lost the game 7-3 to the Charlotte Knights. Former Met Mark Payton had three hits out of the leadoff spot for the Knights. BOX SCORE
Syracuse finishes the year with three more games against Charlotte this weekend. Right-handers Dom Hamel, Blade Tidwell and Mike Vasil will start for the Mets.
