Phillies’ impressive streak stays alive after walk-off win over Mets

The first six innings of Sunday’s Mets-Phillies series finale took an hour and 15 minutes. The clubs combined for five hits — four singles and a double — and had three baserunners reach scoring position. It was get-away-day offense at its finest.
Mets’ starter David Peterson got through six innings on 71 pitches. Phillies’ starter Cristopher Sánchez got through six innings on 69 pitches. After Sánchez finished the top of the seventh, the Phillies’ impressive streak of 32 straight wins when their starter pitched at least seven innings was on the line. The longest such win streak in Major League Baseball history is 42 games, accomplished by the 1942 St. Louis Cardinals.
The Phillies went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh against Peterson. Sánchez was back out on the mound to start the eighth. And, five pitches into the frame, the Mets took a 1-0 lead on a Tyrone Taylor home run to center field. Sánchez’s day was done after allowing a single to the next batter, Harrison Bader.
Orion Kerkering got out of a jam in the eighth — runners reached the corners with two outs. Not allowing another run proved important. Weston Wilson split the left-center gap for a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth, setting the table for Buddy Kennedy, who lined a ball into left field for a game-tying double.
The Phillies stranded Kennedy at third, but after José Ruiz pitched a scoreless ninth, the club came through to finish off a big series win in the bottom of the ninth. Nick Castellanos poked a one-out single to right field and stole second base, giving J.T. Realmuto an opportunity with two outs. The catcher came through, lining an 0-2 pitch from Edwin Díaz into right-center field to score Castellanos.
The win gives the Phillies a nine-game lead over the Mets and also keeps their impressive win streak when their starter pitches at least seven innings alive.

- Taylor’s home run in the eighth came on a 2-2 hanging slider.
- Kennedy’s double came on a 2-2 slider from Peterson.
- Realmuto’s walk-off hit gave the Phillies their 10th walk-off victory of the season.
Notes
- The Phillies’ win on Sunday was their 90th of the season. They won 90 games all of last season.
- Alec Bohm was activated from the 10-day injured list on Sunday. To make room for Bohm on the active roster, the Phillies designated catcher Aramis Garcia for assignment.
