How many miles do transmissions last?

I’ve always felt that Automatic Transmissions are a bit of a crapshoot.I’ve owned ones that were trouble prone (Particularly a 77 Chevy with the TH200) yet lasted almost 20 years without even a fluid change. I’ve owned one that was trouble prone (a 98 BMW 540i) that ran perfectly for me, fluid was changed twice, and then I sold it and it failed on the new owner in 1 week. I felt really bad about that one. I’ve owned many cars that didn’t have trouble prone automatic trannys and all was fine. I do believe that of all the car makers out there, Toyota is your best bet. But even Toyota trannys fail. There are Tundras out there with very high miles on their original trans, and ones that have failed under 200k. In the end the best you can do is change the fluid, drive it carefully and pray to the transmission gods that you’re not one of the unlucky ones!In my life experience, manuals are generally bulletproof if you don’t abuse them.
