Mets Fall 6-2 in Game 2 Against Toronto

The Mets (79-66) dropped the second game of their series against the Blue Jays (69-77) in Toronto on Tuesday night, falling by a score of 6-2. New York’s bats were largely silent, managing just two runs on six hits, while starter David Peterson had a rough third inning. With the loss, the Mets are now tied with the Braves for the third Wild Card spot, with 17 games left to play. 

Recent offensive woes continued for the Mets, who have scored only 10 runs with 19 hits over their last four games. With the series on the line Wednesday, they’ll need a strong showing to get back on track as they chase a playoff spot.

Peterson (9-2) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits across 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two, raising his ERA from 2.75 to 2.98. Peterson, who had been solid in 18 previous starts, struggled to find his groove.

The Mets took an early 1-0 lead in the first, led by singles from Francisco Lindor, Jesse Winker, and an RBI base hit by Brandon Nimmo. But Toronto quickly responded in the second, capitalizing on a fielding error by Mark Vientos, a wild pitch and a walk to even the score with an RBI single.

Toronto broke the game open in the fourth, as Peterson gave up four runs on four hits, including a two-run single and an RBI double, putting the Jays up 5-1. He allowed three singles, a double and a hit by pitch before finally escaping the inning.

Pinch-hitter Jose Iglesias led off the seventh with a double, and after a walk to Tyrone Taylor, Iglesias scored on a passed ball, cutting the deficit to 5-2. It wasn’t enough as the Blue Jays tacked on another insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to a final 6-2.

Huascar Brazobán, Alex Young,and Adam Ottavino delivered solid work, allowing just one run through 3 2/3 innings.

Sean Manaea (11-5, 3.43 ERA) will start on the mound tomorrow as the Mets look to take the series with Toronto. The Blue Jays’ starter will be Bowden Francis (8-4, 3.72 ERA). SNY will air the game at 3:07 p.m.
