Alonso Ties Piazza On Mets’ All-Time Home Run List

Late Tuesday night in the desert, the Mets’ offense exploded against the Diamondbacks to take the series opener, which included a monumental moment for 2024 All-Star Pete Alonso. In the second inning, Alonso hit a deep fly ball to right field for his 220 career home run in a Met uniform. He is now tied for third on the all-time Mets home run list, with Mike Piazza sitting behind David Wright (242) and Darryl Strawberry (252).

“Mike was a childhood hero of mine, so that’s really special. For me, he is one of those guys I looked up to growing up, and it’s really special. I am just happy that I was able to help contribute tonight in a positive way, have good at-bats, and get us on the board early there”, Alonso said.

The 2024 season has not been kind to Alonso, playing slightly below his career numbers, but the homegrown product continues to grind out at-bats in an attempt to catch fire down the stretch. He is currently slashing .245/.330/.470/.800 with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs on the season.

“This year has been a blast. It’s just an absolute blast. I have a really special place for all the guys in this clubhouse in my heart. It’s a really fun group”, Alonso said.

With Pete Alonso heading into free agency this off-season, his future with the Mets is unknown. In his five years in New York, he is 32 home runs away from tying Darryl Strawberry on the all-time home run list for the Mets, holds the MLB rookie home run record (2019), All-MLB First Team (2019), NL Rookie of the Year (2019), NL RBI Leader (2022), and is a four-time all-star. An impressive resume, but with about a month left in the 2024 season and the Mets in a major playoff push, Alonso will have to find a way to keep contributing to the team.
