The Mariners look to secure a series win but will have to get through a tough lefty to do it

After a stellar outing from Bryce Miller supported by Randy Arozarena’s first homer at T-Mobile Park lifted the Mariners to a 5-1 win last night, Logan Gilbert will try to keep the momentum going in the second game of the series against the Rays. Gilbert also has a chance to break the tie he’s in with Logan Webb of San Francisco for the MLB lead in starts of 7-plus scoreless innings; each pitcher has five. Webb is also pitching tonight, against the Brewers. Let the best Logan win.

Lineups:

The Mariners roll out their righty-heavy lineup against lefty Jeffrey Springs, starting with Victor Robles back in the leadoff spot.

Once again, the Rays are apparently still becoming accustomed to Pacific Standard Time or the feel of fresh air on their faces and do not have a lineup graphic published yet, so here it is in-text:

Yandy Diaz 1B
Junior Caminero 3B
Josh Lowe (L) LF
Christopher Morel DH
José Caballero 2B
Taylor Walls SS
Jonny DeLuca RF
Jose Siri CF
Alex Jackson C

Jeffrey Springs LHP

Switch-hitter Dylan Carlson gets a day off, but must be buoyed by the news that St. Louis just cut the reliever he was traded for at the deadline, Shawn Armstrong. The Rays got three years of Carlson while the Cardinals got less than a month of Armstrong, a former Mariner. Dial up the Sam Miller Rays tweet!

Rays starter Jeffrey Springs has only made a half-dozen starts since coming off the IL after having Tommy John a month into the 2023 season. The reliever-turned-starter flashed some promising stuff before he went down and can rack up the strikeouts, but he’s been on a pitch limit of around 85 in his half-dozen starts since returning from injury and hasn’t pitched past the sixth inning; he’s coming off a very short start in Oakland, where the A’s were able to stack hits against him, adding up to three runs, while also working a pair of walks. In each of Springs’ two losses this season, he’s issued two or more walks, so it will be important for the Mariners to get that pitch count up early and work some counts.

Today in Mariners history:

  • 1979: Joe Simpson becomes the first Mariner to record five hits in a game, leading the Mariners to a 6-5 win over Cleveland in 12 innings.
  • 1993: The Mariners trail Toronto into the sixth inning, 0-6, before scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and four in the bottom of the eighth erase for a comeback 7-6 win. Mike Blowers provided the big blast in the eighth with a three-run home run.
  • 2012: Félix Hernández threw his fourth 1-0 shutout win of the season against the Twins. Eric Thames had the game’s lone run, a leadoff home run in the eighth. Félix became just the third pitcher during the Divisional era (since 1969) to record four 1-0 wins in a season, joining Fergie Jenkins (1974) and Bert Blyleven (1976).
  • 2022: Ichiro Suzuki is inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame with a pregame ceremony on the field. He gives one of the great speeches in Mariners history.
