Bats struggle, Yunior Marte gets crushed in loss to D-Backs

The big hit just isn’t there for the Phillies. This, along with Yunior Marte’s inning from hell led to a lopsided 11-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Phillies (69-48) stranded eight runners on base through five innings, including three in the first. With the bases loaded and one out in the first, Brandon Marsh struck out looking and Nick Castellanos grounded into a force out to end the Phillies’ best chance to put up a crooked number against opposing starter Zac Gallen.
Arizona, on the other hand, took advantage of the opportunities they had. They jumped out in front early on a Ketel Marte solo home run and kept adding on. Josh Bell, who came into the game with only one hit in the series, drove in two runs in the seventh on a double. Jake McCarthy hit a pair of two-run home runs.
Maybe Thomson would have been more aggressive with the bullpen if the Phillies were able to capitalize on their chances early on. Instead, Marte pitched the seventh and got crushed. He allowed seven earned runs, including a two-run home run to McCarthy and a three-run shot to Corbin Carroll.
It was a brutal night at the plate for Marsh and Bryson Stott in particular, who combined to go 0-for-7 with a walk. Marsh’s at-bats in Saturday’s game and his high strikeout total in recent weeks raised questions about Rob Thomson’s lineup construction, but the Phillies are not going to stack both lefties in the bottom of the order.
Starter Aaron Nola allowed two home runs over five innings. The Phillies have dropped five consecutive Nola outings. He is 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA in those last five starts.
Highlights
- Arizona got off to an early 1-0 lead on Marte’s 30th home run of the season in the first inning. They added another in the second on an error by Bryce Harper. The Phillies tried to turn two on the speedy Carroll, but a slightly wide throw from Trea Turner bounced off Harper’s glove, allowing Geraldo Perdomo to score from second.
- McCarthy homered against Nola in the fifth to make it 4-1. He homered a second time in the seventh to make it 8-1.

Notes
- Marte left the game in the fourth after Garrett Stubbs slid into his ankle as he tried to leg out a double.
- Gallen left the game with one out in the fifth after suffering what appears to be a groin injury.
- Max Lazar got the final out in the seventh inning for the Phillies in his MLB debut. He came back out and threw a scoreless eighth inning.
- Just as the Phillies did last year against the Padres, the D-Backs gave away replica National League championship rings to the first 30,000 fans in attendance.
