Elephant Rumblings: Final game at Coliseum sold out

Happy Friday, Athletics Nation!

Reality is sinking in, and I wish I could travel back in time and grab Diamond Level seats to the final A’s game at Oakland Coliseum on September 26 against the Texas Rangers, which has now reportedly sold out.

Fittingly, Marcus Semien should be on hand. The former Athletics shortstop and current World Series champion is a Bay Area native who the A’s didn’t bother offering a competitive extension after the 2020 season. That may have marked an inflection point for the organization at which the A’s ceased to be “Rooted in Oakland” and committed to building a true World Series contender out of the team’s last playoff caliber roster.

The A’s rolled out some promotions for late September games, sported a new “Coliseum-commemorating profile picture” on X, and tweeted this reminder of all the wonderful things the Oakland era of Athletics baseball brought across six decades—and that owner John Fisher is now taking away from A’s fans and the city of Oakland.

Presumably, demand would be high for additional seating, which could be made available if the A’s opened Mt. Davis. But that is apparently not in the works. Perhaps the team will change course with sufficient agitation.

To recap: the A’s are leaving Oakland, broadcasting with pride that the final game at the Coliseum sold out, declining to expand seating in the face of high demand, and leaning into the team’s rich history at the Coliseum, which is tragically nearing its end because the organization abandoned negotiations to build a new ballpark in Oakland and decided to move to Las Vegas instead.

Stay classy, Fisher.

Have a wonderful weekend, AN.
