Alonso Crushes Two Homers To Clinch Series Over Rockies

0 0

The New York Mets (61-54) have been waiting for Pete Alonso to have a breakout game. He picked a good time to do that on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies (42-74) at Coors Field. The first baseman hit two mammoth home runs in the first three innings as the Mets defeated the Rockies, 9-1, to take two out of three in the series.

With the Atlanta Braves losing to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Mets currently own the third wild-card spot in the National League.

The Mets needed a fast start and they did just that against Austin Gomber (3-8, 4.92 ERA). Three straight doubles by Francisco Lindor, Jose Iglesias, and J.D. Martinez put New York up 2-0. That set the stage for Alonso, who crushed a two-run shot to center field that went 471 feet.

Two innings later, Alonso came back up to lead off the third and he did it all over again. His solo shot to left center that went 454 feet to left-center put the Mets up 5-0 and gave him 25 home runs for the season.

In the top of the fifth, Mark Vientos would add to the home run fest with his 17th home run of the year. The 425-foot home run gave the Mets a commanding 7-0 lead.

That would be all the runs that David Peterson(6-1, 3.34 ERA) would need. Peterson was back in his hometown of Denver and he put up a good performance in front of his family. The Rockies did score a run against him when Brenton Doyle had a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but that was all of the runs the left-hander would allow.

On the afternoon, Peterson went five innings, allowed one run on four hits, walked three, and struck out five on 88 pitches (51 strikes) as he picked up his sixth win of the year.

In the win, the Mets had every player in the starting lineup record at least one hit. They would tack on more insurance runs in the eighth when Lindor picked up an RBI single and Iglesias had a sacrifice fly. Out of the 13 hits that the Mets had, eight of them went for extra bases.

After Peterson, the Mets bullpen was able to keep the Rockies off the board for the final four innings. Adam Ottavino worked a scoreless sixth (one walk, one strikeout) and Ryne Stanek struck out two in a 1-2-3 seventh.

To finish up the game, the Mets went with Danny Young. While Young did get into a jam in the ninth, he was able to work his way out of trouble to finish two scoreless innings.

Player Of The Game

The player of the game has to go to Alonso, who now has three home runs on this current road trip. This was Alonso’s first multi-home run game since April 13 against the Kansas City Royals.

In addition, he has recorded at least one hit in six of the seven games the Mets have played in August and he went 3-for-5, which was his first three-hit game June 17 against the Texas Rangers.

Stat Of The Game

The Mets were able to get to Gomber early and often on Thursday and they made a little history in the process. It is the first time they have started a game with four consecutive extra-base hits in a regular season game.

On Deck

The Mets will begin the final series of their ten-game west coast trip on Friday night when they head to T-Mobile Park to take on the Seattle Mariners (59-56). You can watch the game on SNY and MLB Network at 10:10 p.m. ET. Jose Quintana (6-7, 3.95) will take the ball for the Mets against Bryce Miller (8-7, 3.62) for the Mariners.
