Severino, Mets’ Bats Flop in 6-3 Loss to Rockies

The Mets (59-54) lost 6-3 to the Rockies (42-72) on Tuesday evening at Coors Field in the opening contest of a three-game series. The Mets notched nine hits, leaving seven on base, and made two errors in the loss. The Mets fall to 2-3 on the road trip spanning Los Angeles, St. Louis, Colorado, and Seattle this weekend with five left to play.

(Box Score)

Luis Severino started for New York, pitching five innings and allowing five runs (four earned) while striking out five. He took the loss and now owns a 7-5 record this season, with a 4.06 ERA. Notably, Severino is now up to 128 2/3 innings for the season, his highest since 2018 when he threw 191 1/3 innings with the Yankees.

The Mets struck first, scoring two runs in the second. Pete Alonso drew a leadoff walk, José Iglesias singled, and Harrison Bader followed with a two-RBI base hit to put New York ahead.

The Rockies responded in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of Mets’ fielding errors to cut the lead to 2-1. Brendan Rodgers scored an unearned run and Kris Bryant advanced to third after his single to center field, thanks to errors from Harrison Bader and Mark Vientos and a hole in the Coors Field netting. José Iglesias then made a nice sliding stop and threw out Bryant at home with a clutch tag from Luis Torrens for the second out, mitigating the damage.

Colorado took a 4-2 lead in the fourth with an RBI double from Elias Diaz and a two-run homer from Jake Cave, which left Coors at just 98 mph and at a 41-degree launch angle. Blame Coors. In the fifth, Tyrone Taylor hit a one-out double, and Brandon Nimmo‘s RBI single cut the lead to one run.

Following a ten-minute rain delay, Severino struggled in the seventh, allowing a leadoff single and a wild pitch that advanced the runner to third. The Rockies extended their lead to 5-3 with an RBI double from Rodgers.

The Mets had plenty of opportunities to score in the heart of the game, too. J.D. Martinez grounded out twice in the fifth and seventh innings with a chance to knock in runs, and with runners on first and third and one out, Jeese Winker grounded into a double play on the first pitch he saw during a pinch-hit at-bat.

Huascar Brazoban pitched two scoreless frames for New York, but Alex Young struggled in the eighth, allowing the Rockies to add an insurance run on an RBI single, making it a final 6-3, after loading the bases.

Attempting to rally in the ninth, pinch hitter Francisco Alvarez knocked a leadoff single, but the club could not capitalize.

STAT OF THE NIGHT

Huascar Brazoban pitched two innings without allowing a baserunner, adding a strikeout. It was a nice bounce back from his performance on Saturday, when he allowed a three-run go-ahead homer to Zach Neto.

ON DECK

Paul Blackburn (5-2, 4.11), who threw six frames of one-run ball in his first start with the Mets, will take the mound tomorrow as New York looks to take the series in Colorado. The Rockies starter will be Ryan Feltner (1-10, 4.97). SNY will air the game at 8:40pm.
