Royals fall short in 6-5 loss to Boston

Ouch.

After their disappointing showing in Game 1 against Boston, the Royals’ comeback fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Red Sox. It shrinks the Wild Card lead down to 0.5 games.

Things started well for Kansas City in the bottom of the first inning. After a 114 mph double from Bobby Witt Jr, Vinnie Pasquantino ripped an RBI single to make it 1-0.

That lead, however, was immediately given up in the top of the second — headlined by an error by Michael Massey. An inning later, Masataka Yoshida ripped a solo home run to make it 3-1.

That score held until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs and nobody on, Massey made up for his error with a solo bomb to the fountains in right center. Moments later, Pasquantino drove in his second run on a double into the gap to tie the game.

Just like the beginning of the game, Seth Lugo couldn’t give the Royals a shutdown inning. With one out and runners at the corner, a wild pitch gave Boston a 4-3 lead. Yoshida, after doing damage early on, came through again with a two-out, two-run single to push the Red Sox’s lead to 6-3.

Kansas City had its opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners at second and third and nobody out, MJ Melendez poked a two-run double to right-center to cut the lead to 6-5. Unfortunately, Hunter Renfroe, Adam Frazier and Maikel Garcia couldn’t drive him in.

The Royals, 63-52, went down without a fight in the bottom of the ninth. Cole Ragans will try and avoid the sweep tomorrow. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. CT.
