Final Score: Yankees 7, Phillies 6 (12 innings)

Through five innings on Tuesday, the Phillies were ahead of the Yankees by a score of 4-1. Jazz Chishlom Jr. had driven in the only Yankees’ run of the game on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice in the first inning. Aaron Nola was only at 73 pitches after grinding through the game’s first five innings, so he started the sixth.

Chisholm, who homered twice on Monday, led off the sixth with another homer to bring the Yankees within two runs. At the time it didn’t seem like it, but Chisholm’s homer in the sixth set him up for an even bigger home run just an inning later.

Ahead by two runs, Matt Strahm pitched the seventh for the Phillies. The left-hander walked Juan Soto and Aaron Judge to start the inning. After striking out Austin Wells, Chisholm stepped to the plate to face Strahm and delivered with a go-ahead, three-run home run.

Down 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies tied the game with two outs on a wild pitch after working their way on with a pair of singles and a pair of ground outs. Bryce Harper grounded out on a hard liner that deflected off first baseman DJ LeMahieu with the bases loaded to end the ninth and send the game to extras.

After failing to capitalize again with the bases loaded in the 10th, the Phillies would tie the game at six in the bottom of the 11th. But after falling behind again in the 12th, they couldn’t plate another run to stay alive.

Since sweeping the Dodgers earlier this month, Rob Thomson’s club will end July with five consecutive series losses. And, since returning from the All-Star break, they’ve blown five separate three-run leads and have a 3-8 record.

Highlights

  • Chisholm’s fielder’s choice in the top of the first came on a ground ball to Harper, who threw the ball to Trea Turner at second base for the second out of the inning.
  • An Alec Bohm double tied the game in the bottom of the first.
  • Austin Hays gave the Phillies a 4-1 lead in the second with a three-run home run — his first homer with the club.
  • Chisholm’s first home run traveled 417 feet and his second came on a hanging slider.
  • With Johan Rojas pinch-running for Nick Castellanos in the bottom of the ninth, the 23-year-old made his way to third base after a Bryson Stott single and a ground out by Hays. Rojas scored after Clay Holmes’ first pitch to Kyle Schwarber got by Wells.
  • After the Phillies left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, the Yankees took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 11th on an Alex Verdugo sacrifice fly.
  • After Stott reached third on a wild pitch, Hays tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th. Bohm lined out to center field with two outs and runners on the corners, sending the game to the 12th.
  • A Gleyber Torres sacrifice fly brought home the eventual game-winning run in the 12th
