Morning Briefing: Mets Adjusting Plans to Find Pitching

Good morning, Mets fans!

After a busy day of trades on Sunday, Andy Martino of SNY reported that the Mets’ trade deadline expectations have shifted due to an “insane” pitching market. Martino added that the Mets are looking to add a depth starter and another reliever and seem reluctant to part with any of their top prospects.

David Peterson surrendered four runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run homer to Matt Olson, and the Mets’ offense couldn’t get much going as they dropped the series finale against the Braves, 9-2. After a promising start to the series, the Mets settled for a split. Luckily for the Mets, the Pirates rallied for a run in the ninth inning and four more in the 10th to down the Diamondbacks, 6-5, keeping the Mets in the third NL Wild Card spot.

The Mets begin a three-game series with the Twins this evening, with Jose Quintana (5-6, 4.02 ERA) taking the hill against former Mets prospect Simeon Woods Richardson. A second-round pick back in 2018, Woods Richardson was dealt by the Mets along with Anthony Kay to the Blue Jays to acquire Marcus Stroman. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.

The Mets officially acquired Jesse Winker from the Nationals in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Tyler Stuart. Winker expressed his excitement about the trade, speaking highly of the team and the fan base. To clear room for Winker, the Mets optioned DJ Stewart to Triple-A Syracuse and transferred Kodai Senga to the 60-day injured list.
