Mets Acquire Reliever Ryne Stanek From Mariners

The Mets have acquired right-handed reliever Ryne Stanek from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for outfield prospect Rhylan Thomas in an effort to shore up their bullpen for their playoff push. Andy Martino of SNY was the first to report that the deal had been completed.

Stanek, who turned 33-years-old on Friday, went 6-3 with a 4.38 ERA, 3.44 xERA, 1.33 WHIP and 44 strikeouts over 46 appearances with the Mariners this season. He owns a career ERA of 3.54 and has made a living getting hitters to chase, leading to an exorbitant amount of strikeouts (10.5 K/9) while also struggling with his command (4.5 BB/9) at times over the years.

Stanek has continuously shown up in the postseason, which bodes well for the Mets as he figures to settle into a late-inning role. He has appeared in 23 career playoff games, going 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA (6 ER/20.0 IP) with six walks and 21 strikeouts.

Thomas, 24, has slashed .265/.318/.387 with five homers in 305 plate appearances between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse this season. He is not among the top 30 prospects in the Mets’ system according to Baseball America, though our own Michael Mayer ranked him at No. 42 in his updated Top 50 list.
