Morning Briefing: Round 2 of the Subway Series Begins Tonight

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Bronx portion of the Subway Series begins this evening, with Jose Quintana (4-6, 4.13 ERA) toeing the rubber for the Mets against right-hander Luis Gil (10-5, 3.17 ERA). The Mets swept the two games the teams played in Flushing in June, including a 12-2 beatdown in which they tagged Gil for five runs in 4 1/3 innings. The season series has ended in a split each of the last two years. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Francisco Lindor clubbed two homers, Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs, and Edwin Díaz escaped a ninth-inning jam to give the Mets a 6-4 victory and a series split with the Marlins. Díaz earned the 108th save of his Mets career, moving him into fourth place in franchise history, surpassing Jesse Orosco. David Peterson danced around six hits and four walks in five innings, limiting the Marlins to two runs in his fifth win of the year. The Mets have now won each of Peterson’s last eight starts. With the Cardinals, Braves, and Diamondbacks all losing, the Mets are just a half-game behind St. Louis for the second Wild Card spot and three games behind Atlanta for the top spot.

The Mets have agreed to terms with fourth-round pick Eli Serrano, 15th-round pick Owen Woodward, and 18th-rounder Jace Hampson. Serrano received $697,500, while both Woodward and Hampson received $150,000.

The Mets have signed catcher Logan Porter to a major league contract and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse. Porter is hitting .293/.390/.500 with eight homers in 223 plate appearances in the minor leagues this year. Additionally, the Mets have designated righty Cole Sulser for assignment.

The Braves have signed veteran utilityman Whit Merrifield to a major league deal, though he has already sustained an injury, taking a ball off his finger before Atlanta’s game on Monday night. The three-time All-Star was released by the Phillies after hitting just .199/.277/.295 with three homers in 174 plate appearances.

The Dodgers have designated left-hander James Paxton for assignment. The 35-year-old has pitched to a 4.43 ERA/4.97 FIP (90 ERA+) with 64 strikeouts against an NL-worst 48 walks in 89 1/3 innings.

1999: Trailing the Cubs 4-1, the Mets rally for three runs in the sixth inning, capped by a two-run triple from Benny Abgayani. Mike Piazza gives the Mets the lead with an RBI single in the seventh, and Armando Benítez secures the team’s third straight victory with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

2019: Robinson Canó crushes three homers and drives in all five of the Mets’ runs in a 5-2 win over the Padres. Canó hits a solo homer and a two-run homer off Chris Paddack, then tags Logan Allen for a two-run shot in the seventh inning. Jason Vargas strikes out eight in six shutout innings to earn his fifth win of the season.
