Trying to avoid a 14th sweep of the season

Before the season started, the White Sox sent out some video of Andrew Vaughn working with Paul Konerko. Not “working” per se, but Andrew is doing some cage work, PK is talking to him about it. They’re talking about swing paths. Especially notable at the time, if I recall, was Konerko telling AV that he was just coming into his prime production years. And when watching, I thought, hmm, I wonder if Vaughn is really up for that. Does he truly have that next gear?

Well, with Andrew at a 91 OPS+ and -0.3 WAR 100 games into the season, I think we know the answer.

Today, Andrew and his below-average hitting and below-average fielding and below-average intangibles bat cleanup for the White Sox, attempting to avoid their 14th sweep of the season:

Drew Thorpe is pitching, so you know this is one of those days where scoring more than average (for the White Sox, that is literally 2.15 runs per game) will earn a win. Do we realize that the White Sox right now have three aces (Thorpe, Erick Fedde, Garrett Crochet) throwing every five games and we’re still losing 70% of our games? The only way for that math to work out is to have a historically bad offense. Thanks to Vaughn and others, check!
