Mets Claim Lefty Alex Young Off Waivers

The New York Mets claimed veteran lefty Alex Young off waivers from the San Francisco Giants Wednesday and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse. The team also announced that lefty Tyler Jay was designated for assignment.

Young, 30, pitched two scoreless innings for the Cincinnati Reds this season before being traded to the Giants on July 8 for outfielder Austin Slater. He did not appear in a game with San Francisco. He is 16-18 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.41 WHIP for his career. Last season with the Reds, he struck out 50 and walked 20 in 53 2/3 innings while pitching to a 3.86 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.

Jay had a 7.71 ERA in 4 2/3 innings with New York, last pitching on July 1. Jay was a first-round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2015, and signed a minor league deal with the Mets in August of last year. He had a 2.40 ERA in 41 1/3 innings with Triple-A Syracuse this season.
