Mets Minors Recap: Kodai Senga Makes Third Rehab Start

0 2

Sunday’s action in the Mets minor leagues saw two special things happen. First was the Binghamton Mets extending their win streak to nine games, which puts them eight games over .500 after being one game under. Second was the St. Lucie Mets annihilating the Lakeland Flying Tigers by a score of 17-0. It’s been a rough season in every way for St. Lucie, and Sunday’s win was a highlight of the year thus far.

And the best news of the day was Mets’ ace Kodai Senga making his third rehab start.

Triple-A

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders (49-42) 3, Syracuse Mets (57-35) 2

BOX SCORE

The Syracuse Mets fell 3-2 to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders on Sunday, losing after entering the ninth inning with the lead. Only four Mets recorded hits, with Ritter and Sánchez driving in the team’s lone runs. Ritter’s 19th home run extended his lead for all Mets minor leaguers, while Mike Brosseau recorded two hits in the loss.

Kodai Senga made his latest rehab start and looked pretty good in his outing. He allowed one run in under five innings while striking out three batters. Shintaro Fujinami followed him and walked three batters in two-thirds of an inning but ultimately didn’t allow a run. Tyler Jay looked good, but Max Kranick blew a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning by allowing two runs on four hits. Taylor Trammell delivered the game-winning shot, a two-run homer to hand Syracuse the loss.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (46-38) 3, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (33-51) 2

BOX SCORE

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3-2 on Friday, giving them their ninth straight victory. Jeremiah Jackson delivered all three RBIs for the Rumble Ponies on two separate doubles in the first three innings, and that was all the team would need for the victory. The Fisher Cats added two of their own in the bottom of the third, and neither team would score the rest of the way.

Tyler Stuart is starting to settle down in Binghamton as he allowed an earned run in four innings to lower his ERA on the season to 4.15. It wasn’t enough to qualify for the win, which went to Junior Santos, who pitched two perfect innings in relief. Trey McLoughlin pitched one hitless inning before Paul Gervase got the save with two perfect innings. The bullpen combined for five hitless innings with just one walk in the victory.

High-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (40-47) 5, Wilmington Blue Rocks (40-46) 0

BOX SCORE

The Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks in a 5-0 shutout. Christopher Suero tacked on the first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before Mateo Gil delivered the hammer with a grand slam in the third inning. Gil’s homer was his fifth of the year, putting the Mets ahead 5-0. That score remained for the rest of the game, giving Brooklyn their 40th win of the year.

The Cyclones pitched a shutout despite it being a bullpen game. Three pitchers (Ramirez, Wenninger, Simon) tossed more than an inning in relief, while Pintaro and Stevenson pitched one inning or fewer. Each pitcher kept runs off the board, limiting the Blue Rocks to six hits and two walks.

Low-A

Lakeland Flying Tigers (54-32) 0, St. Lucie Mets (30-57) 17

BOX SCORE

The St. Lucie Mets’ bats erupted in a 17-0 blowout over the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Everyone in the lineup recorded a hit, including five players who recorded two hits or more. Six players recorded RBIs, and eight players recorded at least one walk. The Mets recorded 17 runs on 17 hits and 13 walks. The Mets scored five in the first inning and, in the fifth inning, already held a 15-0 lead.

Not to be overshadowed by the offensive fireworks, the pitching staff had an impressive game. Franklin Gomez pitched the first three innings without allowing a run before six relievers followed with their scoreless innings. Zach Thornton, Cristofer Gomez, Eduardo Herrera, and Gregori Louis all pitched perfect innings in an impressive effort from the entire staff.
