A thumb befell Nick this time.

Nick Martini dove head first into 2B during yesterday’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers, and he did so awkwardly. Whilst already sporting some form of a wrist/hand brace, the thumb on his braced hand seemed to clip the side of the bag as he slid by, and he winced immediately.

He stayed in the game afterwards, making the latest news yet another potential indictment of how the Reds training staff misdiagnoses injuries. That latest news? Martini’s on the 10-day IL with an injury to that tumb, with the recently optioned Livan Soto now back in the roster fold.

This comes just one day after Jake Fraley landed on the Family Emergency List and Luke Maile, with a herniated disc in his back, hit the 10-day IL, too. Austin Wynns, twice designated for assignment by the club in the last two and a half weeks, was recalled to fill Maile’s spot, while Levi Jordan was DFA’d to make way for Edwin Rios to take Fraley’s spot for now.

Back this time is Soto, who spent 4 days with the Reds in late June around the time the club was juggling the likes of Conner Capel and Jacob Hurtubise on the roster, a week that saw the brief emergence of one Yosver Zulueta, too. According to the team’s transaction page, that week saw Peyton Burdick - Peyton Burdick! - get his DFA papers, too.

The team now barrels towards the All Star break and trade deadline with the likes of Fraley, Maile, Martini, TJ Friedl, Matt McLain, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Nick Lodolo, Brandon Williamson, Tejay Antone, Emilio Pagan, and Ian Gibaut all on the IL, setting the stage for quite the epic word salad of their returns are going to feel like an addition from the front office in the coming weeks!
