Luises Power Mets 9-1 Rout Over Nationals

0 1

The New York Mets entered Wednesday fancying a sweep before their trip across the pond. They bloody well did it.

Luis Torrens hit his first two home runs as a Met, Luis Severino was brilliant, and New York is off to London with their first three-game winning streak since April after a 9-1 victory over the Washington Nationals (27-34) at Nationals Park. The Nats looked knackered.

The 28-year-old catcher had 19 career home runs before connecting for solo shots in back-t0-back at-bats in the third and sixth innings against Patrick Corbin (1-7). They were Torrens’ first long balls since 2022. His second blast was followed by Francisco Lindor‘s 10th home run of the season, his third hitting from the right side. New York (27-35) sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth inning and scored six runs to take an 8-0 lead.

Mark Vientos and Jose Iglesias each had RBI singles and Harrison Bader added a two-run double.

Severino (4-2) gave up one run on seven hits in eight innings while striking out four and walking none. He lowered his ERA to 3.25.

Pete Alonso made four defensive gems in the field on a pair of sharp grounders, a snag of a line drive with a runner on first that led to an unassisted double play and a difficult scoop on a throw in the dirt by Lindor. Alonso also went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run.

The three home runs for the Mets matched a season-high. It was the second straight game in which all nine Met starters recorded a hit, a feat the team had not accomplished since June 2011. It was their second sweep of the year – their first was against the Pittsburgh Pirates in April – and their first sweep on the road since last July at Arizona. The game started after a 1 hour, 25-minute rain delay.

Stat of the Game

The Mets had one triple in their first 56 games. They have had five in their last six games, including Tyrone Taylor‘s in the fifth inning.

Player of the Game

Hard to pick between the Luises, but Torrens had the home runs and caught a runner stealing in what might have been the Mets’ best defensive game of the year. Luis and Luis took the Mets where they had to go.

On Deck

Cheerio to the States. After two days off, the Mets play a two-game set with the Phillies starting on Saturday. This is the third installment of the London Series, and the first two each drew more than 110,000 fans to London Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London.

Sean Manaea (3-2, 3.63 ERA) is slated to battle Ranger Suárez (9-1, 1.70 ERA) on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. ET. The game will air on FOX.
