Mets Minors Game Chat: McLean Making Double-A Mound Debut

0 7

The New York Mets lost 6-3 in Cleveland, and four of the Mets affiliates already played early Wednesday games. Still, two-way player Nolan McLean is the biggest attraction in the Mets minor leagues.

On Tuesday, the 23-year-old made his Double-A debut for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies as the designated hitter. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and did not strike out. The last part feels pretty important and something to monitor going forward as the only weak spot he showed in High-A Brooklyn with a 51% strikeout rate. In 74 plate appearances for Brooklyn, McLean hit .224/.297/.552 with seven doubles, five home runs and 13 RBIs.

On the mound, McLean posted a 2.57 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, held opponents to a .207 average, and had a 32.1% strikeout rate compared to an 8.9% walk rate. McLean also kept the ball out of the air, limiting hitters to an 18.3 flyball rate, and had an impressive 60.3 ground ball rate in Brooklyn.

The Mets took McLean with a third-round pick (91st overall) out of Oklahoma State University last year. He only got 3 1/3 innings and 24 plate appearances under his belt last season.

Mets top catching prospect Kevin Parada has posted just a .627 OPS overall this year, though he has looked better recently, with a .808 OPS and 11 RBIs in his last 10 games.

First pitch for Binghamton tonight is at 6:45 p.m. ET. You can watch the game on MiLB TV or the Bally Live app.
