Prep roundup: Los Gatos clinches SCVAL De Anza baseball league title in final game of the regular season

No. 8 Los Gatos 7, Los Altos 3

A strong finish and a little help from Wilcox helped Los Gatos clinch the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division league title. Los Gatos broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth when Brady Simon doubled in AJ Ljepava. 

Carter Johnstone’s triple drove in two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, and he later scored when a hit-by-pitch brought him home. Anthony Andrews got the win in relief after pitching 4.1 scoreless innings. 

That victory gave Los Gatos (23-4) an 11-3 league record, and knocked Los Altos out of contention for the league championship with a 10-4 record in De Anza play. 

However, Palo Alto still had a chance to win a share of the league title … 

Wilcox 3, Palo Alto 1

…  until Wilcox rebounded from a defeat to the Vikings earlier in the week, and beat Palo Alto to drop the Peninsula school’s record to 10-4. 

Junior pitcher Rj Argel was the star for Wilcox, tossing seven innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run and walking none. Jared Cabildo and Jake Prettol each drove in a run for Wilcox, which improved to 16-11, 8-6. 

No. 13 Burlingame 3, No. 15 Capuchino 2

Burlingame clinched the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division title from the jaws of defeat after it scored three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Capuchino. Burlingame finished its regular season 11-3 in league play, one game ahead of The King’s Academy, which went 10-4 in the PAL. 

No. 6 James Logan 16, Kennedy-Fremont 6

James Logan put the finishing touches on a 21-3 regular season and a 14-0 record in Mission Valley Athletic League play with a rout of Kennedy-Fremont.

Ricky Scarborough and Trevian Martinez each had two RBIs, and Kayden Carmona-Shaw, Evan Yau and Jesus Vasquez each had two hits apiece for the Union City school. 

Cody McFadden and Hunter Padilla each had two hits for Kennedy, which dropped to 7-16, 3-11. 

Oakland Tech 8, Oakland 0

Lee Tshosane was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Gyasi Rapier was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as Oakland Tech advanced to the Oakland Section championship matchup against Skyline. 

Kalen Thomas and Mohamed Mohamed each had an RBI for Tech. Ben Estow led the team with four strikeouts as the Bulldogs improved to 17-6, 9-0 in league play. 

Softball

Alameda 1, Castro Valley 0

Jasmine Whorley, as she’s done so many times over the past two seasons, dominated in the circle for Alameda. She struck out 10 in a two-hit complete game

Leaira Robinson drove in the game’s only run, and Castro Valley’s Jesymae Olympia was otherwise solid. She allowed just three hits and one walk. 

Alameda improved to 18-3, 4-2 while Castro Valley dropped to 5-13, 1-7 in WACC-Foothill Division play.
