Mariners aim for a sweep against one of the best teams in baseball

Look at us, who’d have thought, things of that nature. Series win secured, the Mariners go for a sweep over the Braves, who had the best record in baseball before the Mariners handed them back-to-back Ls over this series (their first back-to-back losses of the season). Emerson Hancock will get to test himself against the team from his home state, which we’ll assume he grew up rooting for, because, you know. Georgia.

Lineups:

The Mariners will be deploying their righty-heavy lineup against lefty Chris Sale, which means sitting Josh Rojas, which is a decision I hate some. Petition to put Rojas in immediately if Sale no-hits the Mariners the first time through.

Game information:

Game time: 12:40 PT

TV: ROOT Sports NW, with Dave Sims and Mike Blowers

Radio: 710 AM Seattle Sports, with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith

Today in Mariners history:

  • 1984: Mariners hit a (then) highest-ever total number of hits with 18 in a thrilling comeback win, rallying back from a 3-8 deficit against Texas to win 11-8.
  • 1989: Ken Griffey Jr. is named AL Player of the Week for April 24-30. Griffey hit .600 (12x20), including a double and a home run, while hitting safely in all six of his games. He also tied a club record with eight straight hits (with Harold Reynolds and Darnell Coles).
  • 2014: Rookie starter Roenis Elias strikes out 10 batters and allows 2 runs (1 ER) in a career-high 7.0 innings as the Mariners win 4-2 , completing a sweep of the Yankees.
  • 2022: Julio Rodríguez hits his first career home run.
